Solid and tiled roofs

Tiles that match the house they sit on

A room that works in February as well as July, under a roof that looks like it was always part of the house. The tile is what decides that, and it gets chosen at your house, in daylight.

Your existing conservatory frame usually stays, most roofs are finished in a few days, and every installation carries a ten year insurance backed warranty.

The same tile as the roof above it. That is the whole decision, and it is what separates a roof that belongs to the house from one that looks added to the back of it.

What you are actually buying

Two things separate one quote from another: what the words on it mean, and what is inside the roof.

Solid, tiled and warm are three different words

  • Solid

The roof is not glass and not plastic. You cannot see through it.

  • Tiled

The finish on top. A tiled roof is always solid; a solid roof is not always finished in tiles.

  • Warm

The insulation inside it. This is the part that changes what the room is like to sit in.

They get used interchangeably, which is what makes two quotes hard to compare. The roof we fit is all three. So the question is not which word is printed on the page, but how much insulation is in the build-up and whether the tiles were chosen against your house or out of a default box.

What goes on the roof, in order

Four stages in the build-up: a supporting structure, then insulation, membrane and battens, and tiles.

  1. 01

    Supporting structure

A timber frame cut to the shape of your roof, light enough to sit on the conservatory frame you already have. That is what avoids structural work and keeps the job to a few days, and everything above is carried by it.

  2. 02

    Insulation

Sits above the room and does the actual work of keeping the heat on your side of it.

  3. 03

    Membrane and battens

A breathable layer so moisture can leave rather than collect, then the battens the tiles fix to.

  4. 04

    Tiles

The profile and colour you picked, with fascias, ridge and guttering to match. The only stage anyone will ever see.

One of ours from above: the tile, the hips and a skylight. A finished roof, not the choice being made.

Choosing the colour

Tile colour is the decision that settles whether the finished roof reads as part of the house, and it is not a decision anyone should make on a screen.

  • Samples are brought to the survey.
  • They are held against your brickwork and your existing roof.
  • They are judged outdoors, in daylight.
  • Screen colours are not authoritative, including the one you are reading this on.

Finished, on two different houses

The same system on an extension and on a Victorian conservatory. Different shape, different roofline, and in both cases the tiles, fascias and guttering were chosen to sit with the house rather than against it.

A garden room extension, grey tiles against buff brick.

A Victorian conservatory, the faceted bay end tiled to match the roofline above it.

We were delighted to find Warm Roof Conservatory LTD who use traditional insulated wooden frames and managed to match the tiling to the existing house. With the use of velux windows and glass side panels we have lost very little light and gained an insulated watertight room usable year round.

10-year insurance-backed warranty

The cover sits with an insurer rather than only with us, so it holds regardless of what happens to the company that fitted the roof.

Excellent friendly company from surveyor and initial appointment through to new roof in just a few weeks. Very professional installation team quickly removed old conservatory roof into one van whilst unloading the new roof materials from a second van. Was completed including plastered inside in just 2 days.

We bring the samples out and hold them against the house in daylight. It takes about ten minutes, and there is no sales appointment attached to it.

Questions about solid and tiled roofs

Will this work with my conservatory shape?

Yes, for the shapes we see most. A lean-to is one straight slope off the house wall and is usually the quickest. A Victorian or Edwardian is hipped, with a faceted bay end on a Victorian, so there are more junctions to cut and seal and it takes longer. A lean-to extension roof is a single shallow slope against the house and goes on the same way. Whichever you have, the survey confirms it. There is more on how a replacement runs on our roof replacement page.

What is the difference between solid and tiled?

Solid means the roof is not glass or plastic. Tiled describes the finish on top of it. A tiled roof is a solid roof; a solid roof is not always finished in tiles.

Is a tiled roof heavier than the glass I have now?

The systems built for this job use lightweight tiles on a timber structure, and the finished roof is designed to sit within what a standard conservatory frame already carries. What we check at survey is the condition of the frame and the base rather than the strength on paper.

Can I see the tiles before I commit?

Yes, and you should. Samples come to the survey and get held against your existing roof outside, in daylight. Nobody is asked to choose a roof colour off a screen.

Will I lose all the light?

Most of a conservatory’s daylight comes through the glazing around you rather than the roof. Where you want light kept overhead, skylights are built in where you ask for them.

The right tile, on a roof that lasts

That is the whole job, and it starts with someone coming to look at what you already have. Leave your name and a number and we will call you back, bring the samples, and tell you what it would take. No sales appointment and no obligation to go ahead.

No obligation, and we won't pass your details on.
